(WILMINGTON) – Living history interpreters will participate in demonstrations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 that show the life of the Battleship crew during World War II. Visitors will be able to view living history demonstrations and activities throughout the day.Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see living history interpreters bring the Battleship to life. See sailors and marines demonstrate typical daily activities, drills, and inspections just as they would have back in WWII. Come and participate in shipboard activities. The demonstrations are included in the regular admission to the Ship.
The WWII Home Front will again highlight the role of civilians, particularly women, during the war effort and will be located in the Visitors Center. This area will feature displays of home front items as well as hands on activities.The local Azalea Coast Ham Radio Club will be down inside the ship using Morse code and original ship’s transmitters to “talk” with the USS MASSACHUSETTS and “Mac” McCullough, one of the ship’s WWII radio operators. Go visit the radio room and talk with Mac and the club! According to Rob Flory, USS MASSACHUSETTS, “Radio Central will come to life on Saturday, Dec. 1 2007, as battleships MASSACHUSETTS and NORTH CAROLINA break radio silence to exchange messages using WWII radio equipment. See how the U.S. Navy used ‘wireless email’ to communicate, and try your hand at Morse code and manual typewriter…’”
