During the holiday season, save a bit of cash and get in the spirit at these free programs at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Enjoy the unique mix of strings, brass, voice and drums when the Magnolia Klezmer Band performs Eastern European Jewish music on Dec. 9. Drop by the following Wednesday during your lunch break to learn how film has influenced fashion.

Music of the Carolinas: Magnolia Klezmer Band
Sunday, Dec. 9, 3 p.m.
The Triangle-based Magnolia Klezmer Band performs music from Romania, Moldavia, Russia and the Ukraine blended with American traditional jazz and swing. Klezmer music, rooted in the Jewish religious tradition, is based on Eastern and Central European Jewish wedding and folk music.

This musical subculture came to the United States when Jewish immigrants settled here in the late 20th century, and it experienced a revival in the 1970s. Today, klezmer has moved beyond ethnic ceremonies and is popular in concert halls, trendy nightclubs and on festival stages around the world. PineCone co-sponsors the Dec. 9 performance.
