Take advantage of two upcoming programs at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. These priceless programs are just that — free to the public and filled with great information. Speaking of priceless, the Sept. 10 lunchtime lecture even includes a free beverage.
Workshop: Preserve Your Family Photos
Most likely, your family photographs are among your prized possessions, but you’re not quite sure how to take care of them. Well, rest easy because you can learn how to protect these priceless treasures during an upcoming workshop. Get practical information about photo preservation and storage during the introductory workshop “Preserving Your Family Photos” on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10-11:30 a.m. Call 919-807-7992 to register by Thursday, Sept. 4.
Kim Andersen Cumber, photo archivist at N.C. State Archives, will lead the workshop and share expert tips and techniques. She’ll demonstrate how to identify historic photos, as well. The program is co-sponsored by N.C. State Archives.
History à la Carte: Horse Sense
Learn about the mystery and controversy surrounding the Shackleford Banks wild horses. The origin of these horses on an uninhabited island at the southern end of North Carolina’s Outer Banks has puzzled generations. Drop by during your lunch hour for History à la Carte: Horse Sense on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 12:10 p.m. Bring your lunch; beverages are provided.
Carmine Prioli, author of “The Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks,” will present this program about the 120 to 130 horses that roam Shackleford Banks. Some experts believe they are descendants of horses that were cast off foundering Spanish galleons. Others insist they are of much more recent origin. Prioli will discuss the herd’s possible origins, natural and cultural significance, hardiness in the face of hurricanes, and complex relationship with humans.
Prioli is a professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of English at N.C. State University. For more information about these programs, call 919-807-7900 or access ncmuseumofhistory.org.
