Maritime Museum Hosts Free Family Fun Day Feb. 21

BEAUFORT – The North Carolina Maritime Museum will host a free “Family Day: Beyond the Edge of the Sea” on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 1-4 p.m.

With demonstrations, special displays, and many hands-on activities, children, parents and grandparents can join the fun to explore maritime life beyond the edge of the sea.

“The museum’s education staff created entertaining new activities for this free Family Day to bring alive coastal creatures and life in the deepest areas under the ocean,” said Joseph Schwarzer, Director, North Carolina Maritime Museums. Visitors can create arts and do make ‘n take craft activities, and learn about creatures that live along the coast and the unusual life forms of the deep sea.

A highlight is to picture yourself in a yellow submarine or deep sea submersible, like the R/V Alvin that takes researchers to ocean depths of almost one mile. Learn about cracks in the earth’s crust on the ocean floor or vents that spew hot water and chemicals on which organisms survive.

Admission is free to this hands-on activity-filled afternoon at the museum.  Large group reservations are requested.  The N.C. Maritime Museum is located at 315 Front Street in Beaufort.  It is part of the Division of State History Museums in the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture with more information at www.ncculture.com.

Museum hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m.  For more information, call (252) 728-7317 or go to www.ncmaritimemuseum.org.
