Public Art SECCA-style: New Venues, iPhone, Architecture and Video

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) will present Berlin artist and architect Anna von Gwinner as the second of seven artists in its year-long public art series Inside Out: Artists in the Community II. Anna von Gwinner’s work melds video projections and unconventional locations.

SECCA will offer three free special events for the public to experience von Gwinner’s work:

  • March 31 — Artist talk in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC-C);
  • April 3, 4, and 5 — First video installation in flight (the first 300 people to attend the video exhibition will have the opportunity to sign up for a chance to win a free iPhone); and
  • April 15-30 — second video installation Minus 8 in partnership with the RiverRun Film Festival.

SECCA is partnering with UNC-Charlotte for von Gwinner’s artist talk. She will speak at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 31 at UNC-Charlotte’s College of Arts + Architecture, School of Architecture in Storrs Hall, Room 110, 9201 University City Boulevard. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Von Gwinner studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London and Architecture at the UdK in Berlin. Following her studies, the artist maintained a succesful architectural practice for several years, which enhances her ability to explore and manipulate space.

To demonstrate how von Gwinner challenges perceptions of architecture and urban spaces, SECCA will present the exceptional video in flight in an unconventional location — an RV storage space. From 7 to 10 p.m., April 3, 4 and 5, in flight will be screened at Moore Self Storage, 3935 Westpoint Blvd. For directions go to www.secca.org or check Google Maps.

The first 300 visitors to SECCA’s unusual projection site will be eligible to win an Apple iPhone 3G. Drawing registration will take place April 3, 4 and 5 during show times. The prize does not include phone service or contract.

From 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., April 15-30, another video work by von Gwinner titled Minus 8 (2005) will be shown in downtown Winston-Salem on Fourth Street at the Loewy Building. Minus 8 depicts silhouetted ice-skaters as they slide gracefully between one another as monstrous figures and tiny shadows. The video will be shown in partnership with the RiverRun Film Festival.
