(BEAUFORT) – The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort announced today a 2009 Summer Education Internship to assist with summer programming. The Maritime Museum offers this internship in partnership with the North Carolina Museums Council, which awarded a $500 stipend for the program.
The Summer Education Intern must be willing to work inside the museum and in the field, including coastal and marine settings. Examples of programs include artifact- and specimen-based museum presentations, assisting with trail hikes through the coastal estuary and interpretation onboard a research vessel.
The intern will receive specific training for educational program responsibilities as well as a general introduction to museum operations, including collections management, research and exhibit design. The intern will research and create an original education program and will be given the opportunity to present it to a public and/or group audience. The final outcome of this project will be a successful addition to the educational curriculum of the museum that may be integrated into future summer programming.
The N.C. Maritime Museum will provide a workspace that includes a desk and computer. In-house educational materials and the museum library are available for program design resources. The museum offers free parking, and the staff can provide assistance in locating short-term housing.
The preferred starting date is Monday, June 1, and the end date is Aug. 7, with some flexibility; work schedule is 20 to 40 hours per week. Compensation is a $500 stipend courtesy of North Carolina Museums Council, plus hourly pay when assisting with fee-based programs.
Qualified candidates should be working toward a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as including education, museum studies, public history, maritime studies or marine science. Applicants should complete a state government application for employment, downloadable at http://osp.its.state.nc.us, and submit it with a cover letter, resume and a list of three references (non-relatives) to JoAnne Powell, Curator of Education at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, 315 Front St., Beaufort, NC 28516, or e-mail it to jo.powell@ncmail.net.
Applications will be accepted through April 20 and the internship award announced May 1, 2009.
