Maritime Museum Summer Camps Mix Learning with Fun

Summer days bring nautical adventures to summer campers at the N.C. Maritime Museum. Whether a camp centers on pirates in the 1700s or saltwater science, the focus is on fun. Courses are suited for students from first through eighth grade.

The classes, programs, and events are activities of the Beaufort facility of North Carolina Maritime Museum. Contact the Museum at (252) 728-7317 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for information or reservations. Note: Reservations must be made by phone or in person (no reservations by e-mail), due to limits on group sizes.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BOATS, BOATERS AND BOAT MODEL BUILDERS

COASTAL ADVENTURES

Coastal Adventures includes daily field explorations and activities at local area museums, coastal trails, shores and beaches. These Science to Sailing courses are designed to enable students participating in the Junior Sailing Programs starting June 8th or 22nd or July 6th or 20th to have a full-day experience–half day of sailing and half day of Summer Science School. Students in the June classes can participate in Junior Sailing in the morning and Coastal Adventures in the afternoon, and students in the July class can take Coastal Adventures in the morning and Junior Sailing in the afternoon. Students who register for Coastal Adventures are NOT required to enroll in the Junior Sailing Program (and vice versa.) Students who are registered for both will have supervision from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM daily. For “full-day” students applications must be completed for both the Summer Science School class and the Junior Sailing Program session.

FISHING AND CRABBING

An introduction to coastal fish, crabs and fishing methods. Cane poles, tackle, hand-lines and bait are provided.

PIRATES I & II

Explore the life of pirates at work, play and in battle through hands-on activities suitable for the age group.

SALTWATER SCIENCE

Under the guidance of NC National Estuarine Research Reserve staff, students investigate wildlife and water quality while exploring coastal waters and ecosystems of the Rachel Carson Reserve.

SEASHORE LIFE

Investigate coastal marine life with an emphasis on adaptations and food chains of the tidal flats, salt marshes and sounds on local islands. Seashore Life III investigates the wildlife and history of the barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
