“Telling Our Stories” Photography Exhibit at Library

RALEIGH – Visitors to Shepard Pruden Memorial Library in Edenton can see North Carolina as they’ve never seen it before in the “Telling Our Stories” Photography Exhibit. It includes 50 images from the state’s mountains to the coast that show different events and time periods. The Friends of the Library will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on June 12, for the unique exhibit which is on display through July 2.

Organized by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.ncculture.com), the exhibition incorporates some of the state’s best professional photographers, the top winners of Our State magazine’s 2008 photography contest, and for the first time photographs from the State Archives are on tour. The State Library of North Carolina contacted public libraries to display the exhibit, which is traveling an eastern and western route through December.

Scenes from eastern North Carolina include Boy with beagle at Cape Hatteras, by Tina Banner, an Our State magazine winner; and Children at terrapin race, a black and white 1939 photograph from Beaufort in the State Archives. Images from the professional photographers include scenes from the U.S. and abroad. Striking images of people, places and nature await viewers.

Visitors write comments in a notebook, and have loved the exhibit. From Edgecombe County viewers wrote, “Great photography,” “Wonderful,” and “Thanks for showing this.” In Henderson County they wrote, “This is an excellent tool to teach the public history and art,” and “Love the photos, especially the older ones, the nature ones, and the tubas.”
