Maritime Museum Hosts Knotting & Splicing Class

BEAUFORT – “Tie the Knot,” “Gorgon’s Knot,” “Sailor’s Knot” – from catch phrases to mythology to work and leisure, knots and ropes have been part of human culture for centuries. The North Carolina Maritime Museum will hold a Knotting & Splicing class in the Watercraft Center across from the museum on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29-30, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., both days.

Instructor Nick Zahradka will show participants how to make the various knots, bends, hitches, and splices used in the maritime world, and when and how to use them. The Museum documents, collects, preserves, and researches the maritime and natural history of coastal North Carolina, and interprets history through educational services and exhibits.

The N.C. Maritime Museum is located at 315 Front Street in Beaufort. It is part of the Division of State History Museums in the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, the state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture. Museum hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission to the museum is free.
