Celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day at Museum of History

Yo-ho-ho, ye mateys! Talk Like a Pirate Day is Saturday, Sept. 19, and there’s no better place to celebrate than the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. Dress like a pirate to get free admission to Knights of the Black Flag, a major exhibit exploring the legacy of pirates, from ancient times to the present, through intriguing artifacts, legends and history.

Blackbeard himself will appear during the not-to-miss program Talk Like a Pirate! for grades four to eight (with adult). Registration is required, so sign up today. Dressed in costume, actor and historian Ben Cherry will present a swashbuckling one-man show about Blackbeard (aka Edward Teach), North Carolina’s most famous pirate. Learn about pirates of yore, and even witness a duel! The Sept. 19 program is offered twice, at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and admission is $5 per child ($4 for Museum Associates). To register, call 919-807-7992. Space is limited.

Make your own Jolly Roger to take home during the drop-in program Make It, Take It: Pirate Flags from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 in the museum lobby. Identify the flags of some of the fiercest pirates to sail the seven seas. Then get creative and design your own.

For more information, call 919-807-7900 or access ncmuseumofhistory.org. The museum is located at 5 E. Edenton St., across from the State Capitol. Parking is available in the lot across Wilmington Street. Weekend parking is free.
