N.C. Maritime Museum October-November Calendar

BEAUFORT – The N.C. Maritime Museum (NCMM) offers carnivorous plants, Fright Night:Haunted Hall & Bonehenge, and curator’s tales of whales and the sea in October and November. Most of the family-friendly programs are free.

14 Wednesday Rachel Carson Reserve
Interpretive walk featuring the wildlife & history of the local estuarine environment. Reservations $15, $10 ages 8-11. 9:15 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

15 Thursday Fall Wildflower Trip
Identify wildflowers, carnivorous plants & birds in the Croatan National Forest with Jeannie Kraus, retired NCMM educator & botanist. Reservations $25. 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

17 Saturday
Fall In-the-Water Meet
Traditional Small Craft Association (TSCA) gathers at Gallants Channel docks. All small boats are welcome. Reservations for pig pickin’. $10, $5 TSCA members. For information call 252-728-2762.

20 Tuesday Learn to Kayak
Beginners receive paddling instruction and guided marsh tour. Reservations $40, $35 Friends of the Museum (FOM), $10 own kayak. 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Modern Piracy
Lecture on the current state of piracy in the world by Maritime Curator Paul Fontenoy. 2 p.m.

Traditional Boat Handling
Learn handling traits of traditional small craft. Reservations $85, $60 FOM. 9 a.m-1 p.m.

24 Saturday Adult Sailing
Sail training aboard stable 17-19 foot sailboats. Reservations $85, $60 FOM. 9 a.m.-1p.m.

30 Friday
Fright Night at the Museum: Haunted Hall & Bonehenge
Prepare to be scared by our haunted exhibit hall “tricks”. Adults $5, FOM and children under 10 $2. Includes sweet “treat”. 5:30-8 p.m. Enter the Auditorium for Keith Rittmaster’s tales of whale bones, burial, & exhuming. 7 p.m.

31 Saturday Carolina Maritime Model Society
Model boat display and meeting open to the public. 2-4 p.m.

4 Wednesday Ports and Pilots
Video & tour of N.C. State Port at Morehead City. Reservations-$10. 10 a.m.-12 noon.

Heritage Watercraft: Ancestry & Development of NC’s Sport Fishermen
Lecture, photos, and discussion with Curator of Maritime Research Paul Fontenoy. 2 p.m.

The N.C. Maritime Museum is located at 315 Front Street in Beaufort. It is part of the Division of State History Museums in the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources www.ncculture.com, the state agency dedicated to the promotion and protection of North Carolina’s arts, history and culture.
