HATTERAS – The design team for the new exhibits at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is seeking public input for the space. Public comment is being sought at a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. The museum is adjacent to the ferry docks in Hatteras Village. This is an opportunity to share ideas before the design process begins and to meet the people involved with the project.
McKenzie Construction of Elizabeth City is contracted to complete construction of the exhibition gallery, including HVAC/climate control and electrical work by November 30. The Raleigh based architectural firm of Peace, Brinkley, Cease and Lee (PBC + L) and the internationally recognized exhibition design firm of Christopher Chadbourne & Associates of Boston have been selected from more than 40 proposals to design the exhibitions.
The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum preserves and interprets more than 400 years of Outer Banks maritime history and shipwrecks. One of the largest concentrations of shipwrecks in the world lies off Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Storms, war, pirates, local history, commerce, exploration, and the loss of the USS Monitor are all subjects that will be treated in future displays.
