RALEIGH–The North Carolina Symphony announced today the auditions for the NCS Youth Sinfonietta, an exclusive chamber orchestra made up of 14- to 21-year-olds from across the state and led by the Symphony’s renowned staff of conductors.
All auditions will be held by video audition submission. After completing an online application form, students can record and submit videos of the required repertoire, from which their participation will be determined. Auditions will be open and video submissions considered until Friday, October 5, 2012, at 5 p.m. Information and the online application can be found at on the Education Programs section of our website.
Twice each year, members of the NCS Youth Sinfonietta come together for a week of intensive coaching with North Carolina Symphony musicians and rehearsals with North Carolina Symphony conductors. The experience culminates in a public performance of challenging classical repertoire, held in the Triangle. This year’s January and May 2013 concerts will be led by Resident Conductor William Henry Curry and Music Director Grant Llewellyn, respectively.
“The ensemble is distinctively ambitious in programming,” says Jessica Nalbone, Director of Education for the NCS, who notes that past programs have included Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin and Prokofiev’s “Classical Symphony. “Students who apply for the Sinfonietta will be a part of an advanced group, capable of performing some of the more challenging orchestral works, and have the benefit of working intimately with two internationally renowned conductors.”
Applicants must be: between ages 14 and 21; North Carolina residents or students enrolled full-time in a North Carolina school or university; and available for all rehearsals and performances during the winter and spring (see schedule below). Applications should be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, October 5.

The NCS Youth Sinfonietta is offered in partnership with the Triangle’s Philharmonic Association.
